What is RichEdit?

RichEdit is a lightweight yet full-featured word processor and text editor software application for Windows. Originally developed in the 1990s, it continues to be updated and improved while maintaining its focus on fast performance and ease of use.

With RichEdit, users can create stylized documents by applying formatting options like bold, italics, underlining, font face and size changes, text colors, paragraph alignment, bulleted and numbered lists, indentation, and line spacing adjustments. A spellchecker is included to catch typos and grammar mistakes.

While more advanced than Notepad, RichEdit aims to provide only the most common word processing capabilities in order to minimize bloat and complexity. So while it lacks niche tools for mail merges, collaboration, complex layouts, etc., it excels at general document creation and text editing tasks.

In addition to rich text files (.rtf), RichEdit also supports plain text (.txt) and older formatted text (.doc) documents. Output can be printed or exported to PDF. The simple, classic interface allows users to be productive right away.

With its lightweight footprint and basic feature set focused on everyday editing needs, RichEdit continues to fill an important niche for a straightforward word processing and text editing application.
