Basic photo editing tools for cropping, color adjustments and filters, and more in an easy-to-use open-source alternative to proprietary software

What is Shady?

Shady is an open-source, cross-platform photo and video editing application. It provides a wide range of features for basic and amateur editing needs, including:

  • Cropping and resizing photos
  • Rotating and flipping images
  • Adjusting color balance, exposure, contrast and other parameters
  • Applying filters and effects like black and white, vintage, HDR etc.
  • Drawing, adding text and shapes
  • Removing redeye
  • Basic video trimming and filters

Shady uses a simple and intuitive drag-and-drop interface to make editing approachable for casual users. It supports common image and video formats like JPG, PNG, GIF and MP4. While it lacks some advanced tools you would find in paid professional software, Shady aims to provide an easy way for amateurs to enhance and touch up their photos and videos without needing to invest time into complex editing suites.

Shady is community-developed, open source software licensed under GPL. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. The project focuses on usability and stability rather than packing in many niche features. For basic everyday image editing needs, Shady provides a fast, free alternative to paid options.
