What is Sweatcoin?

Sweatcoin is a free health and fitness app launched in 2016 that uses smartphone motion sensors to track users' daily steps, converting them into a virtual currency called "Sweatcoins". For every 1,000 steps a user takes, they earn 0.95 Sweatcoins. Users can redeem their earned Sweatcoins in the app's marketplace to purchase goods, services, and experiences offered by Sweatcoin and its partners.

The app aims to incentivize people to become more physically active by literally rewarding steps. The more steps users take, the more Sweatcoins they earn to spend on rewards. Rewards include gift cards to popular retailers, workout gear and gadgets, charitable donations, entries into prize draws, discounts on travel and hotels, and more. Brand partners have included Asos, Nike, Headspace, Airbnb and Reebok.

Sweatcoin uses smartphone motion sensors to prevent cheating, counting only outdoor steps verified by GPS tracking. The app has over 110 million users worldwide, making it one of the largest mobile step-tracking rewards platforms. While popular, it has faced criticism regarding inflated reward pricing and frequent app glitches preventing steps from registering properly.
