The Culling: Battle Royale Style Online Multiplayer Game

Battle royale style online multiplayer game with various weapons, traps, and abilities in a large open arena, developed by Xaviant in 2016.

What is The Culling?

The Culling is a battle royale online multiplayer game developed and published by Xaviant in 2016. The game takes place on a remote island, where 16 contestants compete in a gladiator-style battle to the death for the amusement of unspecified viewers.

Players start with minimal equipment and must utilize weapons, traps, and abilities scattered around the arena-like island to eliminate opponents. Weapons include spears, axes, bows, guns, and explosives, while abilities allow players to briefly increase speed, sense nearby enemies, and more. Players can also craft items, set traps, and utilize the environment to their advantage.

Matches take place on a large, open map that shrinks over time to force players closer together. Health, hunger, and stamina also come into play and must be managed carefully to outlast the competition. The last player left alive wins the match.

Upon release, The Culling garnered positive reviews and sold over 2 million copies. However, numerous issues plagued further development and updates to the game. Servers were eventually shut down in 2018, though fans have since made private servers to continue playing. The Culling 2 was released as a sequel in 2018 but was widely panned and soon discontinued.
