Unturned is a popular free-to-play sandbox survival game originally released in 2014. It was developed entirely by a Canadian high school student named Nelson Sexton under the studio name Smartly Dressed Games.
In Unturned, players are dropped into the fictional Nova Scotia setting in Canada after a zombie apocalypse has ravaged the area. To survive, they must scavenge the environment for vital supplies like food, water, weapons, ammunition, and medicine while also finding shelter to stay warm and sleep safely.
The core gameplay loop involves managing hunger, thirst, health/injuries, stamina, radiation sickness, and temperature gauges to stay alive. Players must be vigilant of zombies that spawn in the map as well as potentially hostile human players. Vehicles and base building allow players to better navigate the 16km2 open world and establish a home base.
With simple blocky graphics inspired by Minecraft and support for mods/custom maps, Unturned has cultivated an active player base of over 27 million registered users. Its straightforward gameplay paired with deep survival mechanics provides a distinctly enjoyable sandbox survival experience.
