Free and open source stealth game with detailed nonlinear levels, focusing on infiltration and AI enemy evasion.
The Dark Mod is a standalone game inspired by the Thief series of stealth games. It began in 2004 as a total conversion mod for Doom 3 but has since been completely rebuilt by its volunteer development team as a game powered by the id Tech 4 engine.
The Dark Mod features highly detailed nonlinear levels focused on stealth gameplay and avoiding detection by AI enemies. Levels are large, open-ended sandboxes that give players freedom in how they accomplish their objectives. Gameplay focuses heavily on stealth mechanics like hiding in shadows, muffling footsteps, distraction tools, and using the environment to your advantage.
As a thief character, the player must use gadgets and their wits to infiltrate buildings while avoiding guards, security systems, and other obstacles. The emphasis is on ghostlike play where you pass through undetected, but combat is still an option if detected. Most fan-created levels have rich backstories and hidden areas to discover.
With its dedication to emergent gameplay, detailed worlds, and focus on stealth, The Dark Mod aims to re-create the immersive Thief experience originally popularized in the late 1990s.
