What is The Witcher (Series)?
The Witcher is a critically acclaimed and commercially successful series of fantasy action role-playing games developed by Polish video game studio CD Projekt Red. The series is based on the fantasy book series of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
The first game in the series, simply titled The Witcher, was released in 2007 for PC. It follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster slayer known as a witcher, as he works to regain his memories after an experiment that erased his past. The game was praised for its challenging combat, mature narrative, and deep RPG mechanics.
The sequel, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was released in 2011 for PC, Xbox 360, and later ported to OS X. It continued Geralt's story as he worked to clear his name of a false accusation, getting wrapped up in political intrigue. The Witcher 2 expanded on the original's gameplay and was seen as an ambitious, sprawling RPG epic.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released in 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and later Nintendo Switch. It is considered by many critics and fans to be one of the greatest RPGs ever made. It featured Geralt searching for his adopted daughter in a massive open world with hundreds of hours of content, impactful choices to make, deep lore, memorable characters, visceral combat, and more. It received significant post-launch support and is still widely played years later.
