The player creates a character and plays from either a first-person or third-person perspective as they navigate conversations, exploration and combat. Gameplay revolves around developing a character by leveling up and improving skills and abilities. Characters interact with computer-controlled non-player characters (NPCs) and other players online. The single-player campaign follows the player character's efforts to defeat powerful forces threatening Neverwinter.
Neverwinter Nights 2 was met with generally favorable critical reception. Critics highlighted its technical improvements over the original game but criticized its repetitive gameplay. An expansion pack, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, was released in 2007.
