The Repast Suite: Free Agent-Based Modeling Platforms

The Repast Suite is a free and open source agent-based modeling and simulation platform used to model social agents and complex adaptive systems. It provides libraries, visualization tools, and an IDE for quickly building ABM simulations.

What is The Repast Suite?

The Repast Suite is a mature, free, and open source agent-based modeling and simulation platform that has been under continuous development for over 20 years. It is used to model social agents and complex adaptive systems in domains like social science, ecology, biology, economics, manufacturing, military, and more.

At its core, Repast provides libraries for agent-based modeling, a visual modeling and simulation builder tool called Point and Click Repast (PC Repast), as well as Repast Simphony which is an integrated development environment (IDE) built on the Eclipse platform. These tools help modelers quickly build agent-based simulations using familiar programming languages like Java, Groovy, Scala or Logo. Repast also comes with a visualization toolkit with built-in charts, graphs, networks, and GIS mapping capabilities to visualize simulation data.

Some key capabilities and features of the Repast Suite include:

  • Point-and-click agent model creation
  • Drag-and-drop visual workflow modeling for simulations
  • Agent behavior modeling using flexible, modular code libraries
  • Connection to data sources like spreadsheets and databases
  • 2D and 3D visualization of model dynamics
  • High performance computing toolkit for large models
  • Built-in tools for sensitivity analysis, optimization, and more

With a large community of expert users and developers around the world continuously evolving the platform, Repast provides a comprehensive toolkit for quickly building and studying agent-based simulations of complex systems.
