What is VIMAGE?
VIMAGE is an open-source container platform included in FreeBSD that provides operating system-level virtualization. It allows users to run multiple isolated virtualized Linux systems called jails on a single FreeBSD host. Some key features of VIMAGE include:
- Resource isolation - Each jail gets its own virtualized network interface, IP address space, root filesystem, process tree and more. This prevents processes in one jail from interacting with other jails or the host system.
- Security - VIMAGE leverages FreeBSD's kernel security features like Capsicum capability-based sandboxing to limit what processes in a jail can access.
- Efficiency - Unlike full virtualization, VIMAGE has near zero performance overhead since jails share the same kernel as the host. It leverages lightweight copy-on-write based storage.
- Flexibility - A wide variety of Linux distributions can run inside VIMAGE jails using compatibility layers.
VIMAGE provides a lightweight, performant and open alternative to commercial container platforms for deploying services in isolation. Developers and system administrators leverage it for server consolidation, application containment, honeypots and sandboxing.
