What is VuFind?

VuFind is an open source library resource discovery system that was developed at Villanova University. It enables users to search and browse through library collections and resources with a single search interface. VuFind provides discovery of physical and digital content such as books, journals, articles, audio, video and more.

Some key features of VuFind include:

  • Search and browse capability across library catalogs, institutional repositories, subscribed databases, digital asset management systems and other library resources
  • Faceted navigation that allows users to filter search results easily
  • Web 2.0 features like tagging, reviews, ratings and RSS feeds
  • Integration with authentication systems to provide personalized account services for users
  • Administrative module gives librarians control over look, feel and functionality
  • Optimized for use at academic libraries and consortia but can be customized for public and other libraries as well

VuFind aims to enable libraries to provide their users with a single search interface that encompasses all of the library's physical and digital content and collections. It is designed to provide a more modern and user-friendly search experience compared to traditional library catalogs. VuFind continues to be developed and enhanced as an open source community project led by developers at Villanova University.
