An online community enabling open collaboration to learn through resources, projects, questions, and assignments, hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, for students, teachers, and researchers.
Wikiversity is an online learning community hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation that is aimed at enabling everyone, including students and teachers, to learn through open collaboration. It features learning resources, projects, questions, and assignments as well as facilities for teaching and research.
Wikiversity resources are developed openly on the site using MediaWiki software, the same software used to support development of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Like Wikipedia, Wikiversity content is transparently editable. This means that articles about learning resources and activities can be edited by anyone to improve, expand, verify, correct, or refine the content. As a result, the evolution of articles becomes a community effort.
The primary goals of Wikiversity are to create and host free, open educational resources, develop new types of teaching activities, allow commonly used educational materials to be hosted and shared online with a Creative Commons license, and foster skills and knowledge that will enhance the readership's ability to contribute to and use Wikimedia and similar projects. Wikiversity hosts a variety of educational materials in almost all languages and can be used by educators as well as learners.
