Windows AIK: Assessment and Deployment Kit

A comprehensive collection of tools for customizing, assessing, and deploying Windows operating systems to new computers, helping IT professionals streamline their workflow.

What is Windows AIK?

Windows AIK (Assessment and Deployment Kit) is a free set of tools from Microsoft that enables IT professionals to automate and customize the deployment of Windows operating systems. It includes tools for:

  • Creating custom Windows PE (Preinstallation Environment) boot images
  • Customizing and managing Windows images (WIM files)
  • Assessing a computer's hardware and software
  • Capturing and applying Windows settings
  • Migrating user settings and data
  • Deploying Windows over a network

Some key capabilities enabled by AIK include automating the installation process with answer files, testing driver and application compatibility using the Windows SIM (Software Inventory and Mitigation) tool, capturing and applying standard desktop or server configurations, switching hardware during migrations without reactivating Windows, and remotely deploying Windows images.

The AIK supersedes older Microsoft toolsets like Sysprep and Setup Manager. It can significantly reduce the effort required to customize, test, and roll out Windows images across an organization. The AIK is available as a free download from Microsoft and works with Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 10.
