Explore a World War II alternate history timeline where Nazis have access to advanced technologies, and play as B.J. Blazkowicz in this long-running series of first-person shooter video games.
The Wolfenstein series is one of the most influential and long-running first-person shooter franchises in video game history. The original Wolfenstein 3D was released in 1992 and pioneered the entire FPS genre by letting players explore three-dimensional levels from a first-person perspective while blasting Nazis. It was created by the legendary developer id Software.
The premise of Wolfenstein involves an alternate history where the Nazis won World War II after harnessing mysterious advanced technologies that gave them weapons like robot dogs, genetically-engineered super soldiers, and energy weapons powered by a mystical substance called "Dieselkraftwerk". Players take on the role of American spy B.J. Blazkowicz fighting behind enemy lines to overthrow the Nazi regime.
The series has seen over a dozen releases across multiple gaming platforms over three decades. After the original Wolfenstein 3D and its prequel Spear of Destiny, the franchise lay dormant during much of the 1990s and 2000s before being revived in 2014 with Wolfenstein: The New Order by developer MachineGames. This critically-acclaimed reboot re-introduced B.J. in a new 1960s timeline and reignited interest in the series. It was followed up with 2017's Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and 2019's Wolfenstein: Youngblood featuring co-op gameplay.
Key elements across most Wolfenstein games include over-the-top action and violence, a mixture of occult and sci-fi Nazi weapons, an emphasis on immersive first-person experiences where players directly shoot, stab, and blast their way through legions of enemies, some light puzzle-solving and exploration elements, and a strong core narrative thread with Blazkowicz at the center opposing sinister Nazi villains.
