What is Genshin Impact?

Genshin Impact is an free-to-play open-world action role-playing game developed and published by Chinese company miHoYo. It was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Android, and iOS in September 2020, and later for Nintendo Switch in April 2022.

In the game, the player controls a customizable protagonist who travels across Teyvat, a fictional world loosely inspired by real-world locations like China, Japan, Europe, India and Egypt. The world is filled with seven distinct nations, many unique characters, imposing opponents, and powerful artifacts. The player battles enemies and completes quests to progress through the story, meet allies with their own stories, and ultimately tries to find their lost sibling.

Genshin Impact features an anime-style open world environment that the player can explore freely. The game monetizes through a gacha system that incentivizes spending real-world money to receive randomized virtual items. Despite this, the game can be completed without spending money. Genshin Impact is also updated frequently with new stories, locations, characters and seasonal events.

Since launch, Genshin Impact has been widely popular, praised for its anime-style visuals, expansive world, engaging combat system and variety of content. As of 2022, it has grossed over $3 billion worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing games of all time.
