Kopano: Open-Source Groupware Suite

Kopano is an open-source groupware suite providing email, calendaring, contacts, tasks, and file sharing as an alternative to Microsoft Exchange Server and Outlook.

What is Kopano?

Kopano is an open-source, on-premise groupware and collaboration suite developed primarily in the Netherlands. It originally started as an alternative to Microsoft Exchange Server and Outlook but has expanded to support most major desktop and mobile platforms.

Kopano provides core productivity features including:

  • Email with support for IMAP, POP3, SMTP authentication as well as webmail access
  • Shared calendaring with meeting/resource scheduling
  • Global address book and personal contacts
  • Task management with priorities and due dates
  • Secure file storage and sharing

Some key advantages of Kopano include its open-source license to allow custom integrations, robust scalability options to support large deployments, and strong security with native encryption capabilities. It supports both cloud and on-premise deployment options.

While the interface is not as polished as Microsoft Exchange/Outlook, Kopano provides small and mid-size organizations a full-featured groupware product that gives users similar core capabilities without expensive proprietary licensing.
