What is Magic: The Gathering (Series)?
Magic: The Gathering (colloquially Magic or MTG) is a tabletop and digital collectible card game created by Richard Garfield. Released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast, Magic was the first trading card game and has approximately 35 million players as of 2021, and over 20 billion Magic cards produced in the period from 2008 to 2016 alone.
Each game of Magic represents a battle between wizards known as planeswalkers. Each player uses their own deck, which contains various spells, items, and fantastic creatures with which to defeat their opponent. Deck construction is a key aspect of the game, with a player able to personalize deck building towards advanced or basic game strategies.
New cards are released on a regular basis through expansion sets. An organized tournament system—played in person and via Magic Online or Magic: The Gathering Arena—fuels a worldwide professional scene.
