Bejeweled is a long-running and hugely popular casual puzzle video game series created and published by PopCap Games. The first game in the series, simply titled Bejeweled, was released in 2001 and has seen many iterations and spinoffs over the past two decades.
The main objective of Bejeweled games is to swap two adjacent gems on a grid to form a horizontal or vertical chain of three or more matching gems. When a match is made, the matched gems disappear from the grid and new gems fall into place, allowing for more matches. Players score points for every match made, with bonuses awarded for matching more than three gems at once or making special gem combinations.
Gameplay is simple and accessible but addictive in nature, lending to Bejeweled's popularity as a casual time-waster. The bright colors, cheerful sound effects and rewards for making matches give the game an upbeat, feel-good quality. Yet making chain reactions and going for high scores also brings out its competitiveness.
The original Bejeweled game paved the way for a generation of similar match-three puzzle games. Its successors Bejeweled 2 and Bejeweled 3 added enhancements like new power-ups and game modes. The series has also spawned various spinoffs over the years, including Bejeweled Blitz, Bejeweled Twist, Bejeweled Stars and Bejeweled Slots.
