What is Microsoft Entourage?
Microsoft Entourage was a personal information manager software application that was developed by Microsoft for Macintosh computers. It was included as part of Microsoft Office for Mac between 2001 and 2011.
Entourage was designed to compete with Apple's own Mail and iCal applications by providing similar functionality for email, calendars, contacts, notes, and tasks in one integrated program. Some of the key features of Entourage included:
- Email with support for POP and IMAP accounts
- Calendaring with support for individual and group schedules
- Contact management including a contacts database and integration with mail and calendar features
- Notes for keeping text notes organized by categories
- Tasks to track to-do lists and project details
- Support for Exchange servers to provide collaboration features for teams
Over its lifetime Entourage saw modest success but never really caught on as a dominant email or PIM solution, especially among power users. It garnered criticism for performance issues handling very large mailboxes and lacked features compared to Outlook on Windows. After Office for Mac 2011, Microsoft discontinued Entourage in favor of the Outlook brand and switched to developing a native Mac Outlook client.
