What is Monday Night Combat?
Monday Night Combat is a free-to-play, multiplayer, third-person shooter video game developed by Uber Entertainment. Released on August 11, 2010 for the Xbox 360 through Xbox Live Arcade, it was released onto Microsoft Windows on January 24, 2011 via Steam.
The game pits two teams against each other in arena combat, with each team protecting their money ball while attempting to destroy the other team's. Players take on the role of one of several classes of Pros, base defenders who use a variety of weapons and defenses to achieve their goals. Combat takes place in arenas that are placed atop giant advertisements (such as for bacon), many of which feature deadly pits or exposed areas. Some arenas also feature neutral robot enemies that will attack both teams.
Gameplay elements and strategies draw from titles in the multiplayer online battle arena, tower defense and hero shooter genres. The game supports six-on-six online team matches as well as a 3-on-3 offline mode called Blitz. The free version allows access to two character classes that rotate weekly, while the paid version permanently unlocks all six classes.
Monday Night Combat received generally favorable reviews on both platforms. Critics focused on the merging of genres, strategic elements and cartoonish art style as high points. It won several awards from media outlets and was named the best Xbox Live Arcade game of 2010 by Mashable.
