Bottles

Bottles is an open-source Wine wrapper designed to help run Windows software on Linux, macOS, and other operating systems. It aims to integrate Windows applications into the native desktop experience as seamlessly as possible.

What is Bottles?

Bottles is an open-source application designed to integrate Windows software into Linux, macOS, and other desktop operating systems that do not natively support Windows programs. It is essentially a graphical front-end and wrapper for Wine, making it easier to install and configure Windows applications on non-Windows platforms.

One of the key goals of Bottles is to allow Windows apps to integrate into the native desktop environment as smoothly as possible. For example, on Linux it can put icons for Windows apps in the application menu, let you pin them to the taskbar or desktop, and handle file type associations correctly. It sets up Wine prefixes for each Windows program, bundles needed Wine dependencies, and manages Wine versions and components automatically behind the scenes.

In addition to simplifying the Wine experience, Bottles also aims to enhance it where possible. It includesits own implementations of various Windows features like registry editors and DLL overrides to improve compatibility. There are also lots of customization options from theming to simulated desktop effects. An intuitive GUI makes Bottles accessible for casual users while still offering more advanced configuration abilities for power users.

Overall, Bottles lowering the barrier to run Windows software on other desktop platforms. With features like one-click installs for apps, integration with native desktop components, and automatic Wine prefix management, it makes what can otherwise be a complicated process much easier for the average user.
