Explore a fantasy world based on Norse mythology and Swedish folklore, casting spells and solving puzzles with up to four players.
Magicka is an action-adventure video game developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Paradox Interactive. It was released for Microsoft Windows in January 2011, for PlayStation 4 in May 2016, and for Nintendo Switch in February 2020.
In Magicka, up to four players take on the roles of wizards from a sacred order tasked with stopping an evil sorcerer who has thrown the world into turmoil, his evil creations besieging the forces of good. Players combine different elements—such as fire, water, life, shields, cold, lightning, arcane, earth—to cast spells to defeat opponents, offering a complex spells system. The game world is based loosely on Norse mythology and Swedish folklore.
Magicka makes references to fantasy fiction, including Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls series as well as taking humorous jabs at Swedish culture and gaming community in-jokes. The game also includes a full campaign mode with a irreverent comedic story full of references as well as challenge modes.
Magicka received generally favorable reviews with praise given for its array of spell combinations, 2 to 4 player co-op mode and humor. Some criticisms included its unstable release state and lack of online chat while in play. Several expansions adding new campaigns, modes, robes and elements have since been released.
