What is Octopath Traveler?
Octopath Traveler is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix for the Nintendo Switch. First released in Japan in 2018, it was later released worldwide in July 2018. The game features a unique 'HD-2D' graphics style which combines 16-bit sprite character models with richly detailed three-dimensional environments.
The story follows eight travelers—Ophilia, Cyrus, Tressa, Olberic, Primrose, Alfyn, Therion, and H'aanit—on personal quests across the fantasy world of Orsterra. The eight stories can be played in any order with the travelers joining together in different combinations for their adventures. Battle utilizes a boost system where characters charge up attacks over several turns for greater effect.
Upon release, Octopath Traveler received positive reviews for its visual style, music, and take on classic JRPG gameplay. An updated version Octopath Traveler II was announced for release in 2023, featuring returning and new characters in another tale across Orsterra.
