What Is Keka?
Keka is a file archiver for macOS that handles compression and extraction of ZIP, 7z, TAR, GZ, RAR, and many other archive formats. It fills the gap left by macOS's built-in Archive Utility, which only handles basic ZIP files.
Key Features
Keka creates 7z, ZIP, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, and DMG archives with adjustable compression levels and AES-256 encryption. It extracts from over 30 formats including RAR, 7z, ISO, CAB, and MSI. Drag-and-drop operation and Finder integration make it simple to use.
The app supports splitting archives into volumes, excluding macOS resource forks (.DS_Store files), and setting passwords on archives. It is lightweight and fast, with a clean native macOS interface.
Pricing
Keka is free when downloaded from the official website. A paid version is available on the Mac App Store (approximately 5 dollars) to support development. Both versions are identical in features.

Apr 17, 2026Frustratingly Buggy for Basic Tasks
For a supposedly simple archiver, Keka has been surprisingly unreliable. It frequently hangs when extracting large RAR files, and the Finder integration often fails to recognize supported files. While the price is right, the constant crashes make it frustrating to …

Apr 17, 2026Falls short of the basics
The integration into Finder and the drag-and-drop simplicity are great in theory, but Keka has become unreliable for me. It frequently fails to decompress common RAR archives from my colleagues, claiming they are corrupted when other tools open them fine. …

Apr 14, 2026Overhyped and unreliable, went back to The Unarchiver
While Keka looks promising with its clean interface, I've had constant issues with corrupted archives when extracting multi-part RAR files. Twice it's crashed Finder during large compression jobs, losing my progress. For a tool whose main job is reliability, it's …
