What is EverQuest?
EverQuest is a 3D fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that was originally released in March 1999 by Sony Online Entertainment. It takes place in the medieval fantasy world of Norrath and allows players to create a character and embark on adventures including exploring expansive environments, completing quests, defeating enemies, acquiring loot, and interacting with other players.
When it launched, EverQuest ushered in a new era of MMORPGs and helped popularize the genre. It featured a large persistent world, emergent gameplay, social interaction between players, challenging dungeons requiring coordinated group gameplay, and an extensive quest system. While primitive by today's graphical standards, EverQuest featured advanced 3D visuals at the time which helped immerse players in its fantasy setting.
Over its long lifespan, EverQuest has had 19 expansion packs adding new zones, races, classes, quests, features, and raising the level cap over time. It pioneered many systems adopted by later MMORPGs like raid boss encounters requiring large groups of players working together. Although now eclipsed by newer games, EverQuest retains a strong loyal fanbase even over 20 years from initial launch due to its challenging gameplay, communal atmosphere, and continually updated world.
