Explore the Syberia adventure game series, developed by Benoît Sokal, where Kate Walker uncovers a mystery across Europe and Russia, featuring self-discovery themes.
Syberia is a series of story-driven adventure games developed and published by Microids, based on an original concept by Belgian comic book creator Benoît Sokal. The first two games follow Kate Walker, an American lawyer who is sent on an assignment to finalize the sale of an automaton factory in a remote European village, only to get caught up in a surreal search for the mysterious heir who holds the keys to the factory. The series is notable for Sokal's poetic art direction and writing, as well as the atmospheric music by Inon Zur.
The first Syberia game was released in 2002 for Windows and focused mainly on investigation and logical puzzle-solving as Kate uncovers clues leading her further east. It received critical acclaim for its enchanting storytelling and challenging puzzles. Syberia II arrived in 2004 and expanded Kate's journey across Europe into Russia aboard the Trans-Siberian railway. It polished the formula with additional character interactions and more challenging puzzles incorporating Kate's expanding investigatory skills.
After over a decade, Sokal and Microids returned to the series in 2017 with a third game subtitled The World Before. While more combat-focused, it continued Kate's globe-trotting adventure alongside new characters and threats. The series stands over 15 years later as an exemplar of classical point-and-click adventure storytelling, transporting players across captivating environments brought to life by Sokal's signature art nouveau-inspired style.
